Leaders of the Communist Party of Bangladeh (CPB) paid rich tributes to the freedom fighters placing floral wreaths at the Savar National Memorial on Sunday morning on the occasion of Independence and National Day. After paying tributes the speakers said ‘We have not achieved desired freedom yet though we have got a flag and a constitution through the liberation war. The constitution of ’72 has been distorted, they added. The leaders called upon to lead the country with the perception of the Liberation War. They also demanded to reestablish nationalism, democracy, secularism and socialism which are the main bases of the ’72 constitution. The programme was attended, among others, by CPB Presidium Member Sazzad Zahir Chandan, Aniruddha Das Anjan, members of the central committee of CPB Ahsan Habib Lablu, Abdullah Kafi Ratan, Kazi Ruhul Amin, Joly Talukder, Sadequr Rahman Shamim and Dr Sajedul Haque Rubel.
Sramik Karmachari Peshajibi Samonnaya Parishad
A meeting organised by Sramik Karmachari Peshajibi Samonnaya Parishad was held on the 25th instant in the city’s Shahbag marking the Genocide Day. Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed was present as the chief guest. While speaking Tofail made a scathing attack on BNP-Jamaat combine, saying the alliance resorted to the destructive path instead of pursuing democratic system. “BNP and Jamaat are accomplices of Pakistan,” he told. Tofail said the people are away from the BNP-Jamaat alliance for their destructive activities and added “People have no faith on them.” Criticizing BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia for her comment on the number of martyrs in the 1971 Liberation War, he said BNP wanted to cash on in the genocide issue politically. Tofail said the military machine of Pakistan had unleashed one of the worst mass killings in a single night on March 25, 1971 by machine guns, tanks, mortars and automatic weapons. He said more than one lakh people were killed in the crackdown, code named “Operation Searchlight”.The function was addressed, among others, by General Secretary of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) Shirin Akther, Nurjahan Begum Mukta, MP and Actress Rokeya Prachi. Shipping Minister and Convenor of the organisation Shajahan Khan presided over the programme.
