Telecom Reporter’s Network’ Bangladesh
A discussion on ‘Mobile Handset and its Role in Building Digital Bangladesh’ organised by Telecom Reporter’s Network’ Bangladesh (TRNB), a platform of the journalists working in country’s telecommunication sector was held in a city hotel. State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim was present as the chief guest. While speaking Tarana said “We’ve already sent a letter to finance division for considering tax and VAT structures on mobile handset before budget session to promote local manufacturer.” Terming smartphone as one of the main component for building “digital Bangladesh”, Tarana opined contribution of the sector to country’s GDP would be increased further through slashing tax and VAT on mobile handset. TRNB General Secretary Shamim Ahmed presented the keynote paper on the issue while its President Rashed Mehdi moderated the discussion. The programme was also addressed, among others, by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood and Director General of Custom Intelligence and Investigation Departments Dr Moinul Khan.
United Nations High Commission for Refugees
A daylong seminar on “Role of Mass Media for Removing Statelessness” organised by United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) was held recently at CIRDAP auditorium in the City. The seminar was addressed among others, by senior journalist Kazi Abdul Hannan, Country Director of UNHCR Stina Ljungdell, UNHCR’s Assistant Protection Officer Fahmida Karim, Sowvik Das Tomal and LRF General Secretary Didarul Alam Didar. UNHCR organised the seminar for 40 participants of Law Reporters’ Forum (LRF), an organisation of working journalists’ in law and human rights. President of LRF Ashutosh Sarker presided over the programme.
