Bangladesh Students’ Union
President and General Secretary of Bangladesh Students’ Union Laki Aktar and Gilani Shuva in a statement on Thursday bitterly criticized the heinous attack on the procession of the union which was brought out in the city supporting hartal called by the National Committee for Protecting Oil-Gas, Mineral Resources and Power-Port to meet its demands for the cancellation of Rampal Power Plant Project. The leaders urged the government to cancel the project immediately to save the world largest mangrove Sundarbans. They also called upon all to be united against this project. The leaders warned the government to meet their demands immediately, otherwise they will be compelled to forge greater movement. The leaders said in the attack about twenty leaders and activists of the organisation including Laki Aktar, Gilani Shuva, Assistant Secretary of the union Anik Roy, Joy Banik, Shahriar, Nirjhar and Kanok Hayat were injured. The police also arrested many leaders of the organisation incuding Sangsad leader of the University of Dhaka Ashikur Rahman Ashik. The leaders demanded immediate release of the leaders.
Hawkers Coordination Council
A rally organised by Hawkers Coordination Council was held in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city. In the programme hawkers’ leaders demanded immediate rehabilitation of the hawkers formulating a policy through a committee consisting of parliament members, mayor, councilor, police administration and representatives of hawkers’ organisations led by the Ministry of Local Government following the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They said eviction of hawkers from footpath without their rehabilitation is the violation of human rights. They urged the authority concerned to take necessary measures for the rehabilitation of hawkers before their eviction. The event was addressed, among others, by hawkers’ leaders Kamal Siddiqui, Khokon Majumder, Arif Chowdhury, Nurul Islam Nuru, Abdul Kadir, Abul Kalam Jewel, Alamgir Talukder, Shahin Talukder and Anisur Rahman. Coordinator of the council Abul Hossain presided over the function.
