BIWTC Officers Association
The inaugural ceremony of the newly elected executive body of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transports Corporation (BIWTC) Officers Association was held at Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Bhaban in the city’s Topkhana Road on the 2nd instant. Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan was present as the chief guest. While speaking Shajahan said the government has given special importance on modernization of the river communication system considering the socio-economic situation of the country. He said that a lot of programmes are underway to check river pollution along with river excavation and river bank protection. As part of these initiatives, the government plans to introduce ‘circular water way’ surrounding the Dhaka city through bringing navigability in those rivers that located around the city after carrying out dredging and make it free from pollution. During the regime of the present government, a total of seventeen ferries have been constructed with a view to make the ferry service self-sufficient, he said, adding that ferry service between Paturia-Kazirhat has been resumed. The programme was also addressed, among others, by Shipping Secretary Ashok Madob Roy, BIWTC Chairman Dr Engr Gayan Ranjan Shil, Director (Administration) M Shahidul Islam and General Secretary of the association SM Motahar Hossain. President of the organisation SM Ashiquzzaman presided over the function.
Int’l Fed of Airlines Pilot Assoc
International Federation of Airlines Pilot Association (IFALPA) has praised Biman’s Captain Nawshad for showing extraordinary professional skill and efficiency in handling the BG 122 flight with damaged landing gear. In a letter written to Nawshad recently, the IFALPA Acting President Captain Ron Abel said: “I am writing to you to recognise your actions taken on your flight on the 22nd December, 2016 which ensured the flight landed safely.” “I have appraised the situation and the decisions you made to continue to the airport with the better emergency support and then after the low approaches to confirm the problems, the skill you used to land the aircraft with the damaged landing gear,” he added.
