Bangladesh Medical Association

A discussion marking the 26th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Dr Milon organised by Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) was held on Sunday near his grave at Dhaka Medical College. Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim was present as the chief guest. While speaking Nasim said that the road in front of Dhaka Medical College would be named after Shaheed Dr Milon. “The naming will be inaugurated within few days,” he added. Recalling the contribution of Dr Milon, the minister said he had laid down his life for establishing democracy in the country. “We have to work hard to further strengthen democracy in the country to materialize the dream of Dr Milon,” he added. Milon’s mother Selina Akhtar said the killers of his son are yet to be brought to justice. She demanded immediate trial of the killer of Dr Milon. The event was addressed, among others, by former Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque, BMA Secretary General Iqbal Arslan, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan and Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad Secretary General Prof MA Aziz. President of the association Prof Mahmud Hasan presided over the function.

Water Aid Bangladesh

A roundtable on ‘Faecal Sludge Management Practice in Bangladesh’ jointly organised by Water Aid, Bangladesh and Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) was held in the city on Sunday. Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad M Fazle Rabbi Miah was present as the chief guest. While speaking Rabbi insisted that an approval from authorized planners should be made mandatory for any construction at upazila level like big cities and towns. Miah said a planned city and an ideal village should be made side by side with the country’s economic growth to turn the country a developed nation and planners could play an important role in this regard. He opined that the country’s exiting sewerage system is not enough and these are not the time befitting so there is very much needed implementation of Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) to make the city’s sewerage system
effective and sustainable. The function was addressed, among others, by Vice-Chancellor of Stamford University Dr M Firoj Ahmed, BUET professor Dr Mujibur Rahman,
Sathkhira poura mayor Tashkin Ahmed Chishti and DPHE engineer Robin Raihan. BIP President Prof Dr AKM Abul Kalam presided over the programme.
