Sandhani
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Sandhani and International Federation of Eye Banks (IFEB), USA on November 22 last in the city in order to encourage people to donate cornea posthumously to bring sights to the blind. President of Sandhani Professor Dr Mohammad Ali Asgar Moral and IFEB President Mahmood Farazdaghi signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations. Cornea are collected from a donor within six hours of the person’s death based on the information provided by their family members and inserted to the eyes of a blind to bring back the person’s sight, said Professor Dr AKM Salek, an eye specialist. The IFEB technical support is expected to give a boost to the voluntary work of Sandhani, an organisation of medical and dental students who promote posthumous eye donation and safe blood transfusion campaign since 1977.
Gana Unnayan Kendra
Two recreational centers were built by Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK), an NGO for the underprivileged Santhal children with the financial support of BRAC. The centers were opened for the Santal children at Madarpur and Joypurpara of Sahebganj Sugarcane Farm (SSF) area of Rangpur Sugar Mills Limited under Govindaganj upazila recently. The well-decorated centers are equipped with various types of amusement tools and materials. The children of Santal palli are now using the facilities. Earlier they (Santal children) had no scope to play and amusement in the area. Locals said with the launching of the centers the Santal children are now passing their leisure times happily amid playing, singing and dancing. Executive chief of the GUK Abdus Salam said the Santal children were in fear due to the recent violence in the area. To help normalize the situation through removing fear and panic, the GUK has built the recreational centers for the Santal kids, he added.
