Nari Sramik Kantha
A discussion organised by Nari Sramik Kantha was held at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the city’s Segunbagicha on Monday on the occasion of its debut. Women leaders of different trade unions put forward the demands for ensuring maternity leave and fair wages for the women workers employing in various outlets including industries and factories across the country. They said 82 per cent export earning comes from the country’s apparel sector. Nearly 40 lakh workers, of which 85 percent are women, are working in the sector, they said. But most of these women workers could not enjoy their maternity leaves and other privileges properly, they complained. According to a report released by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, the women leaders said a large number of women are working in the agricultural sector as the male labourers are gradually declining in the sector. The function was addressed, among others, by President of Garments Sramik Karmachari League Lima Ferdous, General Secretary of Bangladesh Jatiya Sramik Federation Shamim Ara, President of Jatiya Nari Sramik Jote Umme Hasan Jhalmal and President of Garment Sramik Federation Jahanara Begum.

A discussion on ‘Broadcast Journalism’s Development and Progress: Perspective Bangladesh’ organised on the occasion of World TV Day by Media Museum of Bangladesh at a hotel in the city on Monday. Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu was present as the chief guest. While speaking Inu said television would continue to play its powerful role as a strong medium against militancy in order to keep this soil safe, secured and peaceful for every citizen.’A short video footage is still more powerful than a long speech,’ the minister said. He said the government has already formulated broadcast policy while the broadcast law and the new wage board for journalists, including those who have been working for electronic media, would be in place by early 2017. Congratulating the TV and all other media personnel on the World TV Day, the minister said TV has been a key medium in strengthening democracy in the country as it could meet people’s quick demand through spot news and other forms of information dissemination.
The programme was addressed, among others, by Chairman of National Human Rights Commission Kazi Riyazul Haque, Director General of Bangladesh Television SM Harun Ur Rashid and representatives from different media organisations.
