Human Rights & Peace for BD
A discussion organised by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) was held in the city recently marking the completion of one decade of the rights group. Former Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain was present as the chief guest. While addressing Mozammel said effective use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) can become very handy in easing backlog of cases in the country. “If we can use it effectively, it can play a vital role in easing the current backlog of cases. But the judges and the lawyers have to contribute more to ensuring the use of ADR,” he said. The programme was addressed, among others, by former Supreme Court Judge Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury, Supreme Court Bar Association President Yusuf Hossain Humayun, HRPB Chief Advocate Monjil Morshed. Lauding the role played by HRPB in protecting human rights and environment, Justice Choudhury said because of them, authorities concerned have been able to recover land of rivers surrounding the capital from the encroachers.

A discussion on Jail Killing Day organised by Rajshahi University Teachers Association (RUTA) was held at the Senate Building of Rajshahi University (RU) on Friday. Health Minister Muhammad Nasim was present as the chief guest. While speaking Nasim urged all to observe the martyrdom day (18th February) of RU teacher Dr Shaheed Shamsuzzoha as the national day. After discussing with Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, the minister said, he will place a proposal in the next cabinet meeting in this regard. He said Dr Zoha was killed during mass-upsurge by Pakistani military on February 18, 1969 and he was the first martyred intellectual. His bloodshed had triggered the then movement to a greater extent and as a whole his contribution and sacrifice could never be forgotten, he added. Nasim said the trial of the killers of Bangabandhu and four national leaders could not have been held if Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not come to power. The function was addressed, among others, by former mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and Awami League Central Executive Committee Member Nurul Islam Thandu. RUTA President Prof Dr Shahidullah presided over the event.
