Five green and civic rights activists urged the Shipping Ministery to take immediate effective steps to investigate alleged irregularities and corruption in the Department of Shipping (DOS) as per directives of the Prime Minister’s Office. They made the demand in a joint statement on Tuesday. The statement said that following a direction of PMO, the shipping minister ordered to form a probe body headed by an additional secretary to investigate the alleged massive irregularities and corruption in DOS, especially against one of its ship surveyors and examiners, who is also a director of a mega project funded by South Korea regarding issuing fake ‘no objection certificate (NOC),’ inland drivership and mastership certificates and following unfair means in conducting drivership examination and inland vessels’ registration and annual fitness activities. The directive letter from the office of the principal secretary to the Prime Minister had reached to the Ministry of Shipping before Eid-ul-Azha and the shipping minister initiated the file about 15 days ago. But the Ministry is yet to take effective measures to implement the direction of PMO and the decision of concerned minister, the statement alleged. In the statement, green and rights bodies have urged the government, especially concerned officials of MOS, to avoid the tendency and ill motive to protect any corrupt officer in shipping sector. The signatories in the statement are: Citizens Rights Movement President Major (Retd) Md. Mafizul Haque Sarker, Supreme Court’s lawyer and Nodi Rokkha Shopath President Barrister Sadia Arman, former lawmaker and Nirapad Noupath Bastobayon Andolon President Advo Tasnim Rana, Poribesh Sammato Bashjogga Dhaka Bastobayon Parishad Convenor Tusar Rehman and Council to Protect Passengers Rights of Bangladesh (CPPRB) general secretary Sekendar Hayat, says a press release
