Nagorik Chhatra Oikya
A rally organised by Nagorik Chhatra Oikya was held in front of Jatiya Press Club in the city on Saturday. In the rally the speakers demanded immediate release of Nagorik Oikya Convenor Mahmudur Rahman Manna. They also called upon all to build students-people unity to resist extremism and militancy to save the country and its people. The programme was addressed, among others, by General Secretary of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal Khalekuzzaman, central member of Nagorik Oikya Shahidullah Kaiser, President of Sonar Bangla Party Sheikh Abdun Noor, General Secretary of Oikyabaddha Chhatra Samaj Mohammadullah Madhu and leader of Biplabi Workers Party Akbar Khan. Convenor of the organisation Nazmul Hasan presided over the function.
Bangladesh Students’ Union
A programme to pay last respect to freedom fighter Shirin Banu Mitil organised by Bangladesh Students’ Union was held at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city on Friday. Hundreds of people including politicians, professionals, cultural activists and students paid rich tributes to freedom fighter Shirin Banu by placing wreaths on her coffin. A contingent of police gave a guard of honour and salutes as sombre looked admirers and fans stood in solemn silence at the altar of the Shaheed Minar against the backdrop of last post in bugles also recalling his contribution to the 1971 Liberation War. Communist Party President Mujahdiul Islam Selim in his speech said Banu fought for the emancipation of human beings until her death. She was an iconic woman whose life and works should be followed by the new generation, Selim added. On March 27, 1971 Shirin Banu in guise of a male, participated in the Liberation War from Pabna Police Lines. On receiving training from Gobra freedom fighter camp in India, she took part in the freedom struggle from Sector No. Nine (9).
