Bangladesh Network for Urban Safety

A day-long symposium on ‘Safety in the Garment Industry, Five Years after Rana Plaza’ organised jointly by Bangladesh Network for Urban Safety (BNUS) and BUET-Japan Institute of Disaster Prevention and Urban Safety (BUET-JIDPUS) was held at BUET Council Building.of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) on Monday. In the programme the speakers said that about five years ago, on the fateful day of April 24, 2013, the world was shocked by the loss of lives of around a thousand garment factory workers caused by collapse of the Rana Plaza building at Savar. They also said that five years after the Rana Plaza disaster, it is a good opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved and what challenges are still remaining in ensuring safety for the workers. Leoni Cuelenaere, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Bangladesh was present as the guest of honour with Professor Dr. Saiful Islam, Vice-Chancellor of BUET in the chair. Shamsuzzaman Bhuiyan, Inspector General, Department for Inspection of Factories and Establishments (DIFE) and Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan, Director General, Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) were present as special guests.
