Bangladesh Cigarette Manufacturers Association at a meeting held in the city on Monday demanded withdrawal of surcharge on cigarette and change in the tax slab on tobacco products in the upcoming budget for fiscal year 2018-19 (FY19). During a pre-budget meeting with the NBR, British American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATB) Chairman Golam Moinuddin said market share of medium standard cigarette came down to 20 percent while high quality brand to 9 percent. Besides, cigarettes are smuggled into the country, he said and urged the NBR to take steps against cigarette smuggling. He demanded withdrawal of surcharge on cigarette. National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan presided over the meeting which was also attended by representatives of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB) and Printing Industries Association of Bangladesh. BATB Managing Director Shehzad Munir demanded tax cut on cigarette brands under premium segment and increase tax on low-grade ones.
