Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management Office and Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management – Bangladesh jointly organised job training programme in Cox’s Bazar recently. The training programme started from March 4 and ended on 7 Ms. HyunSook Yun, Chief Programme Coordinator, Ms. Maria Teresa Quinawayan, Training Officer- A-PAD, Philippines, Ms. Michelle Joseph, Information & Communications Officer, Sri Lanka, Lee Donghwan, PR Coordinator, A-PAD Korea, Jinho Noh, A-PAD Korea, Arun Khadka, Quick Volunteer (QV), Nepal and officials from A-PAD Bangladesh participated in the training . This programme was supported by Sasakawa Peace Foundation-Japan. The participants visited Dhaka Community Hospital Trust (DCHT) Mother & Child Health Care Center and Mobile Clinic in Rohingya camps in Hakim Para and also visited the largest camp in Kutupalong. The participants also met with Dr. Mizbah Uddin Ahmed, Upazila Health & Family Planning Officer (UHFPO) to share his experience in health coordination for the past six month in Rohingya crisis. The team also visited Community Clinic in Matarbari located in coastal area prone to cyclone and flood. During the visit the team has chance to interact with the local community and participated in the distribution of goat for the livelihood programme , says a press release.
National Alliance of Humanitarian Actors
Speakers at a sharing conference yesterday called for shifting the power (localising humanitarian response system) as it would ensure better humanitarian response during any emergency or disaster scenario. Local actors should be empowered so that they can effectively take part in humanitarian actions. It must be understood that, it is not shifting the power, rather shifting or taking the responsibility. Shifting the power means sharing the capacity and equitable existence of power, they said. They made the remarks while addressing the conference titled “National Lessons Learning and Sharing” of Shifting the Power Project at Spectra Convention Centre at Gulshan in the city.
Mohammad Reaz Ahmed, DG , Department of Disaster Management under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, attended as the Chief Guest. Satyabrata Saha, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, attended as the guest of honour. Sakeb Nabi, Country Director of ChriastainAid, Shafiqul Islam, Country Director of ADD International, EhsanKur Rahman, Executive Director of Dhaka Ahsania Mission, Farah Kabir, Country Director of ActionAid, among others, spoke at two sessions of the programme. Terming local actors as the first and main responders after a disaster strikes, the speakers said they know the context and language, and are able to negotiate access. The project has already created a platform named ‘National Alliance of Humanitarian Actors (NAHAB)’ and it is being supported by 44 Local/National NGOs so far over the last one year. Shifting the Power (StP) stands up for a change in mindset and business models in the humanitarian system as a whole at the governmental, national, local and international NGO level. Shifting the Power, a global initiative of six international NGOs (ActionAid, CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Tearfund and Concern Worldwide), led by Christian Aid in Bangladesh and supported by DFID through START Network, started its journey in Bangladesh in 2015.
