The Supreme Court fixed July 17 (Sunday) for passing the order on a leave to appeal petition seeking bail of veteran journalist Shafik Rehman in a sedition case.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed the date on Thursday.
Noted journalist, and former Editor of the Daily Jai jai din, was arrested for allegedly plotting to
abduct and murder Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
A case was filed by Detective Branch (DB) of Police with the Paltan Police Station in August 2015. BNP’s cultural wing JASAS Vice-President Mohammad Ullah Mamun and a number of unidentified BNP leaders were named in the case.
A US court jailed JASAS leader Mamun’s son Rizvi Ahmed Caeser on March 4, 2015 for his involvement in bribery scheme to obtain confidential information from a former FBI special agent in New York.
Shafik Rehman filed the leave to appeal petition with the apex court after the High Court rejected his bail petition on June 7 on the ground that the investigation was going on.
On June 29, a Chamber Judge of the Supreme Court transferred the leave to appeal petition to the full bench for hearing.
