Optimum, safer use of pesticides stressed

There is no alternative to optimum and safer use of pesticides in crop fields to save the agricultural products from poisonous contamination causing many harms to the public health.
The opinion came at the daylong training workshop on ‘Safer and Optimum use of Pesticides’ organised by pesticide marketing company Sinzenta Limited at the conference room of Mithapukur Upazila Agriculture Office in the district on Wednesday.
Mithapukur Upazila Agriculture Officer of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Khorshed Alam attended the workshop as the chief guest with Rangpur Zonal Manger of Sinzneta Limited Hamidur Rahman in the chair.
Rangpur Regional Sales Manager of Sinzneta Limited Khaledur Rahman and Senior Sales Unit Officer Shamim Akhter attended the training course as the main resource persons.
Moderated by Stewardship Manger from the Head Office of Sinzneta Limited Mohammad Habib Ullah, its field level officials Nurul Islam Badal, Masud Kabir and Rostam Ali also addressed the workshop.
Fifty male and female farmers from different villages under Mithapukur upazila participated in the training workshop.
In their speeches, the speakers especially underscored the need for educating the farmers and disseminating adequate knowledge among them for using pesticides to the optimum level in combating pests’ attacks and crop diseases.
They called upon the farmers to acquire adequate knowledge on the use of pesticides and its handling as half of the farmers in Bangladesh still use more pesticides than the optimum quantity.
The chief guest put emphasis on creating adequate awareness and providing necessary knowledge among the farmers for combating pests’ attacks and crop diseases ensuring a safer and optimum use of the poisonous chemical pesticides.
He suggested the farmers to have adequate knowledge on pesticide use and its proper handling as half of the farmers still use more pesticides than the optimum to protect their crops posing a real threat to the public health.
