Heavy sounds of gunshots and explosions were heard during the ‘Operation Eagle Hunt’ in a one-storied suspected militant hideout in Trimohoni village of Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district on Wednesday evening.
The law enforcing agencies led by the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) launched the anti-militancy drive around 6:45pm which was called off temporarily due to lack of light and security
issue around 8:30pm, said our Chapainawabganj correspondent quoting Abdul Mannan, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.
The operation was conducted as the residents of the house refused to surrender peacefully, the Police official said. No casualty was reported during the operation where at least a militant couple and two of their minor daughters might have stayed with other suspected militants, he said. Earlier, Police surrounded the house of Saidur Rahman alias Jentu Biswas in Trimohoni village early Wednesday after receiving information about militant presence there, said district Superintendent of Police (SP) TM Mujahidul Islam. According to him, militant Rafiqul Islam alias Abu, his wife Sumaiya Begum and their two daughters Nuri, 8, and Majida, 6, might have stayed at house with other militants.
Meanwhile, the local administration imposed Section 144 to ensure security in the area since 6:00am, said Shafiqul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Shibganj. The CTTC’s Abdul Mannan said that law enforcers started the ‘Operation Eagle Hunt’ in the evening and postponed the operation temporarily.
The operation will resume today (Thursday) morning if the weather remained clear, the police official said.
“We are trying to cajole them into surrendering,” he said. “A shot was fired from inside the house around dawn once it was surrounded. “We cannot confirm how many explosives or weapons may be inside,” said Mahibul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of the CTTC unit. “Around 5:00pm, police brought Abu’s mother Fulsana Begum and his auntie Chamely to tell him to surrender. However, the call of Fulsana to her son went in vain as no response was heard from inside,” said Mujahidul Islam.
Fulsana Begum said Abu’s full name is Rafiqul Islam. He studied in a madrassa and got married to Sumaiya Begum nine years ago. They had two daughters Nuri, 8, and Majida, 6, the SP said.
Assistant Superintendent (Gomstapur circle) of Police Mainul Islam said that acting on a tip-off, police encircled the suspected militant hideout around 5:30 am.
The militants fired several gunshots from the house towards the law enforcers in the morning. However, none of the lawmen were injured, the ASP said. “We have also raided three houses in Kanshat Union’s Abbas Bazar area earlier in the day, but found no militant presence,” he said. Quoting locals, Habibul Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station, claimed that Abu along with his family rented the house two and half months ago introducing him as a spice vendor.
The house was rented free of cost to one Abu, 30. One Saidur Rahman, 75, owner of the house, gave him the living quarters, the OC said.
Police Headquarters recently circulated a list of nearly 5,000 suspected militants to all district police chiefs. Since then, the law enforcers have been carrying out special drives in different areas to apprehend the militants.
