AT least eight people, including a teenage boy, were killed in Kishoreganj, Faridpur, and Comilla on Wednesday night and early Thursday. In Kishoreganj, three siblings and two more were killed and over 50 injured in a clash between two rival groups of ruling Awami League and main opposition BNP. The dead included two siblings in Faridpur who were hacked to death by miscreants. Several more people were killed in Kishoregonj in land disputes and local rivalries late last week.
What is more terrible is that police recovered the decomposed body of a 14-year-old boy from a septic tank in his school in Comilla. The sudden increase of crime shows the law and order situation is slipping out of hand at every place; as criminals are least bothered about police action and justice through court trial. The perpetrators are powerful or enjoy protection from powerful quarter for political reasons and they don’t hesitate to engage in fight or commit murder. The situation is loathsome in rural areas while it is similarly terrible in urban neighbourhoods.
As there is a tendency that factional fights and crime increase in winter and there is a growing need to mobilize law enforcers to take care of the law and order away from keeping busy in political duty and toll collection. They must know saving people’s life should be the highest priority.
The killing in Kishoreganj took place following a longstanding dispute between the groups over a canal, which falls between two villages. Two groups had clashed several times before and also filed cases against each other. This time when they engaged in fight it left four dead on the spot and another injured succumbed to his injuries on his way to a hospital. The fight this time started over fishing in the canal.
The killing of the two siblings in Faridpur took place at Swashan Ghat. Police said miscreants equipped with sharp weapons attacked them leaving critically injured. They were taken to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital where they died. The class IX student in Comilla went missing on last Saturday and on a call on victim’s uncle’s phone for Tk 50 lakh as ransom police arrested three SSC examinees of the school. They later admitted to have strangulated the boy and dumped him in the septic tank.
We must say these are brutal cruelties when human values did not work in those beasts like people. They deserve to be given exemplary punishment to set example. The fact is that criminals are enjoying impunity and therefore they commit crime time and again. The impunity under the shelter of powerful people or buying police who give misleading report to destroy the case must end. Rule of law must be firmly established to reduce crime.
