Shah Alam Nur :
Only 50 per cent of the development work of Purbachal New Town Project in the capital has been completed in last 21 years since July, 1995.
The slow progress would double the project cost to Tk 77.82 billion whereas initially the budget for the project was estimated at Tk 33.11 billion.
The government undertook the project to establish the satellite city at Purbachal on the outskirts of Dhaka city in 1992 and land acquisition began in 1993 for implementing the project on about 6,150 acres.
About 26,000 residential plots of different sizes and 62,000 apartments with all necessary infrastructure and urban facilities are being developed at the site.
The Purbachal project is located in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj and Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur between Balu and Shitalakkhaya rivers, 16 kilometres from the zero point in Dhaka.
A member of Rajuk, preferring anonymity, said they are yet to ensure electricity, water, gas and other utility services in the completed portion of the project.
He said the Power Development Board has already started installation of a power sub-station at sector four of the project and Titas Gas
Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd also agreed to install a sub-station in the project area.
He said Rajuk is trying to take water supply line to the project under public-private partnership as the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority refused to give connection to the project area.
“We hoped to start giving electricity connections within a short time in 50 per cent areas of the project, where development of roads and land has already been completed,” Project Director M Anwar Hossain told The New Nation on Monday.
He said the city development authority is yet to take a decision on gas and water connections to the project.
He further said the project work is going on in full-swing and the Rajuk would hand over the plots to owners by the end of the current year.
He said the site development work at 17 sectors out of 30 has almost been completed, and in other sectors development is going on.
Road construction work at 12 sectors has been mostly completed. In six sectors, road construction is underway. Out of 42 bridges, construction of 28 bridges is ongoing and progressed nearly 70 per cent, he added.
The Rajuk intends to plan and develop the area as a ‘self-contained’ new township with all modern facilities and opportunities using 38.74 per cent of land for residential plots, 25.9 per cent for roads, 6.41 per cent for administrative and commercial establishments, 3.2 per cent for institutions and industrial park, 6.6 per cent for urban green and open spaces, 7.1 per cent for lakes and canals, 2.5 per cent for sports facilities and 6 per cent for education, health and social infrastructures.
