Crocodile census in Sundarbans: Only 100 crocodiles existing !

Only 100 plus crocodiles are existing in the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world, according to a recent primary survey report.
With the financial aid of the World Bank, the Forest Division and a non- government wild life research institution named Centre for Advanced Research in Natural Resources & Management (CARINAM ) completed the survey in the month of February, 2016.
Md. Jahidul Kabir, Divisional Forest officer(DFO) of Khulna regional wildlife and Nature management division said, “Global Positioning System(GPS) was utilized regarding the census of crocodile.”
The total area of the Sundarbans is 10 thousand kilometers, among them 6017 squire kms is in Bangladesh chapter. The water body of the Sundarbans in Bangladesh is 1873 squire kms, comprising with 450 rivers and canals.
Abdur Rob, crocodile specialist and former forest officer of Karamjal wildlife and artificial crocodile generating center said, at least 6 thousand crocodiles were supposed to exist in the Sundarbans, but according to IRM report published in 1985, only 2000 crocodiles were existing.
However, Abdur Rob thinks that only 100 crocodiles may exist at present in the Sundarbans.
“There were two species of crocodiles- marsh and estuarine crocodiles. Marsh was declared abolished in 1963, at present only estuarine crocodiles are existing in the Sundarbans which are also going to be abolished within near future”, said Abdur Rob.
The executive chief of CARINAM Dr. SMA Rashid said, “We have been conducting survey work in the Sundarbans since more than one year, but the number of crocodiles is disheartening us.”He further said, crocodiles are not existing everywhere in the Sundarbans. Besides, generating of works of crocodiles are being hampered alarmingly.
Of course, he declined to comment anything regarding the number of crocodiles before the final survey.
Md. Sayeedul Islam, East Division Forest Officer of the Sundarbans said, “Artificial crocodile generating center was established at Karamjal tourist point in 2002 under the project “Sundarbans Biodiversity Conservation”. This center was started with only 5 crocodiles, the number of present crocodile is 258.
