Revealing that only 10 percent buildings are constructed following the National Building Code in the country, renowned urban planner Prof Dr Jamilur Reza Choudhury on Wednesday said there will be catastrophic disaster if a powerful earthquake hits Bangladesh.
He made the observation while speaking as the chief guest at an orientation workshop on ‘Incorporating Earthquake Resilient Feature in Engineering and Technological University Curriculum’ at the University Grants Commission (UGC) auditorium.
Shabel Firuz, Country Director of Islamic Relief in Bangladesh, was the special guest at the programme with UGC Chairman (In-charge) Prof Dr Atful Hye Shibly in the chair.
Prof Dr Mehedi Ahmed Ansary of BUET presented the keynote paper at the workshop while UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled gave the welcome address.
Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-chancellor of Asia Pacific University, said the number of multi-storied buildings is increasing day by day in the country due to rapid urbanisation.
However, the house owners do not consult the experts while constructing their buildings. Side by side, the engineers do not concentrate on earthquake-resilient feature with regard to designing buildings.
“So, incorporating earthquake-resilient feature in the course curricula of disciplines concerned of engineering and technological universities is a must, he observed.
UGC members Prof Dr M Muhibur Rahman, Prof Dr Mohammad Mohabbat Khan, Prof Dr Abul Hashem and Prof Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, teachers of different engineering and technological universities, including Buet, Ruet, Kuet and Cuet, and representatives from National Alliance for Risk Reduction and Response Initiatives (NARRI) attended the seminar.
