The telecom regulator and law enforcement agencies are going to conduct drive and strengthening its monitoring to prevent the sale of unauthorized, smuggled, clone and counterfeit products in different e-commerce sites and classified online market places.
The regulator — Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has initiated the move against the backdrop of the rise of selling such kind of products especially electronic goods, as the people are being cheated buying product from the e-commerce sites and classified online platforms.
However, the e-commerce businessmen have demanded guideline for e-commerce and classified online platforms as well as make trade license mandatory to run the industry in a discipline manner.
On Sunday, the telecom regulator has issued cautionary notice regarding import, sale and lease of unauthorized radio equipment in the country.
The notice issued by Lt. Col Molla M Zubayer, Director, Spectrum Management Division, directed importers and distributors to collect permission before sale and lease of any kind of radio equipment like mobile phone handset, SIM enable tablet PC, Walkie-talkie, fixed wireless phone, modem, DTH receiver and antenna, satellite TV receiver and others.
The regulator said: “if such kinds of activities are continued it will take stern action against them.” e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (eCAB) informed that currently that it has a total of 245 members. It said the businessmen have to attain trade license and other necessary documents to get the membership of eCAB.
Apart from the eCAB members, there are over 600 e-commerce sites running business in the country while over 7,500 facebook pages are also active.
Besides, several classified online market places such as bikroy.com, ekhanei.com, daraz.com, kaymu.com etc are also perating.
Rajib Ahmed, President of eCAB, said they can take any punitive measures only against their members.
Emphasizing on quality control, he requested the BTRC and organizations concerned to formulate guideline and made the trade license mandatory to run e-commerce sites and online platform in the country.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) also issued cautionary notice for the people during buying any kinds of products online.
Talking to Bangladesh Sangbad Sanstha, Krishna Pada Roy, Joint Commissioner, DMP said they are continuously monitoring the e-commerce sites and online market places to stop the sale of any kinds of smuggled, counterfeit and clone products.
He urged the e-commerce sites and online platforms to ensure the ownership of the product before sale to escape legal procedure.
Roy also said people should be more cautious before online buying of products.
