Economic Reporter :
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has said onions are entering in the country from neighbouring India under previously opened letter of credits (LC).
He made the remark on Sunday a day after Indian onions entered into Bangladesh following Delhi’s recent withdrawal of an export ban.
“A decision on onion import will be taken soon after considering the interest of the consumers and producers in the country, ” Tipu Munshi said while replying to the queries of the reporters at the Commerce Ministry on Sunday.
He said, “The import cost of per kilogram of onion stands Tk39. The decision on fresh import will be taken soon.”
“India resumes and bans onion export to Bangladesh as per their convenience. So the Bangladesh government has taken various steps to meet the local demand for onions overcoming the import dependency,” the minister said further.
