Onion seeds cultivation turns profitable to Faridpur farmers

Cultivation of onion seeds has brought smile to the district’s farmers as it has appeared to be a highly profitable venture.
The farmers are increasingly opting for its farming noticing the high income it fetches.
According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension, a total of 3,000 hectares of land were brought under onion seeds cultivation in the district with a target to produce 6,500 maunds of seeds.
Additional Director of Faridpur DAE Sujon Majumdar said farmers in the district expect production of more than 6,500 maunds of onion seeds, the market value of which is Tk66 lakh.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) collects 75 percent seeds from the district each year, he added.
He also said they are trying to inspire youths of the district for cultivating onion seeds for its high profit value.
After visiting different areas, the UNB correspondent found the growers busy harvesting onion seeds.
Talking to some farmers in Ambikapur area of Sadar upazila, this correspondent found them pretty hopeful about the bumper production of onion seeds, for which the growers gave credit to the favorable weather condition.
The farmers hoped to get three maunds of seeds from each bigha.
They said the market price of onion seeds is Tk90,000 per maund but they spent only Tk35,000-40,000 per bigha.
So they expected Tk2.5 lakh from each bigha.
Akbar Khan, a farmer of the village, said he cultivated onion seeds on four bighas expecting to get a yield of 12 maunds of seeds.
Abu Bakkar Khan, another onion seeds grower, said they are inclining to cultivate onion seeds’ seeing it a highly profitable job.
BADC collects onion seeds from the district and supplies it to different parts of the country, he added.
If BADC and local banks give them support, more seeds could be produced in the region and the county will not have to depend on import of onion.
Shafiqul Islam, a farmer of Gobindapur village, said the weather is favorable for onion seeds cultivation.
This year, he expects a bumper production of the item.
Sardar Sarafat Ali, deputy commissioner of Faridpur district, said the farmers are getting high profit from onion seeds cultivation and the people of Faridpur Sadar, Bhanga, Nagarkanda and Saltha upazilas are becoming self-reliant though this.
