Since the Indian government banned export of onion to Bangladesh, the local traders increased the price of both imported and locally produced onion, abnormally in the local markets as else where of the country. It may be mentioned here that only a few days ago the local traders once again raised the price of onion on the plea of price of onion rising in India. Indian onion is now being sold here at Tk.55 or more per kg as against of Tk.25 while the locally produced onion is selling at Tk.68 or more.
Price of garlic which is also regarded as an important ingredient of the kitchen has also increased. Local produced garlic is selling in the local district markets at Tk.100 per kg as against of Tk.80. But its quality is very poor. On the other hand, imported Chinese garlic is selling here at Tk.90 per kg as against of Tk.80 previously. The price of ginger is still high. The commodity is being sold in the local markets at Tk.200 or more per kg.
Price of rice is also an upward trend. The rice is now being sold in the local markets at Tk.1100 to Tk.1650 per maund of 40 kgs, according to different qualities while the same was being sold here at Tk.1020 to Tk.1560 previously.
Potato price which is always considered to be a popular and the cheapest vegetables has suddenly shot up Tk.11 or more per kg. The commodity is now being sold in the local markets at Tk.36 or more per kg according to qualities in the district markets as against of Tk.25 previously. Prices of other vegetables like karalla, okra, arum, eggplant, Jhimga, Kushi, Kakrol, Patol, Chichinga, bottle gourd, pumpkin etc. are still high. They are now being sold at Tk.45 to Tk.50 or more per kg.
Price of eggs has also suddenly increased here. Per Haly of 4 farm produced eggs is now being sold here at T.34 as against of Tk.24 only a few days ago. But the locally produced egg is hardly available and price is abnormally high. Per hally of 4 locally produced egg is selling here at Tk.48 to Tk.50 or more, if available. Some dishonest traders are selling the eggs of Sonali poultry in the name of local poultry.
Broiler poultry is selling at Tk.130 or more per kg here as against of Tk.110 previously. The supply of local poultry has fallen short and their price is very high. They are now being sold in the district markets at Tk.350 to Tk.400 per kg.
The supply of all kinds of fish is abundantly available here. But their prices are high. Small sized hilsa is selling here at Tk.400 to Tk.600 per kg according to different sizes while the hilsa of standard sized, if available, is selling at Tk.1000 to Tk.1500 per kg according to sizes
Beef is selling here at Tk.500 or more per kg. It is alleged that in some cases flesh of buffalo is sold in the markets in the name of beef. Mutton is selling here at Tk.750 or more per kg. But quality mutton is hardly available in the local markets.
