The prices of onion and sugar have been increased further in the city kitchen markets raising woes of the consumers, especially the commonners. Traders blamed on supply shortage.
Visiting different kitchen markets in the city, this correspondent found that the prices of onion, one of the main cooking ingredients, further increased last week as the local varieties was sold at Tk 55-65 and imported ones Tk 50-55 per kg on Friday.
Md Jewel, a trader at Karwanbazar, said, “We are not getting enough supply of onion and this is why the prices have gone up.”
Onion importer Mohammad Hafiz claimed, “This year production of onion has been less compared to previous year while the production fell also in India. Bad weather hampered preservation of onion.”
Moreover, he said, India increased prices of onion on export to Bangladesh, which also pushed the prices up here.
He also expressed hope that the price would come down soon as the import is gradually growing up.
According to traders, Bangladesh consumes about 28 lakh tons of onions annually, of which about 50 percent are met with local produces and the rest with imported one.
In fiscal year 2017-18, 2.33 million tons of onions were produced in 212,194 hectares in the country.
According to Department of Agricultural, in the first seven months of the last fiscal year, 2.38 million tons of onions were produced in the country.
Meanwhile, prices of garlic have also gone up by Tk10 per kg. As of the yesterday, per kg garlic sold at Tk120, which was Tk100.
Meanwhile, sugar prices also showed an upward trend last week. Sugar prices witnessed a Tk 2.0-4.0 hike at per kg during the period. It was sold at Tk 56-65 a kg on the day.
Prices of ginger are still high as it was selling at Tk 150-180 a kg in the city markets on Friday.
