Price hike: Onion importers being quizzed by CIID

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has started quizzing onion importers to investigate the reason of price hike and artificial crisis of the cooking element in the market.
Some 10 importers of Hili and Chapainawabganj are being questioned at the CIID’s Kakrail office on Monday, the first day of the investigation, CIID official sources said.
Apart form gleaning information on onion import, sell and hoarding, the customs officials also inquiring about making high profit and money laundering, they said.
The grilling process would continue as per schedule of the NBR office, according o them.
Earlier, customs officials of the NBR made a list of 47 importers during their investigation in onion price hike.
A total of 1.69 lakh tonnes onion have been imported from August till 18 November.
Onion price rose to Tk 250 a kg from Tk 40 two months ago as India stopped exporting the essential cooking ingredient. Salt market also became volatile on November 19 increasing its price to Tk 100 per kg from Tk 35. Rice price also saw a rise for last couple of days following the transport strike.
