The farmers have exceeded the fixed farming target of onion by 3.11 per cent so far predicting bumper production in Rangpur agriculture region this season, official sources said.
After completing sowing of onion seed, the enthusiastic farmers have still been continuing transplantation of its seedling at places to further exceed the fixed farming target in the region.
Meanwhile, with the appearance of the early variety winter onion in the local markets, price of the spicy vegetables came down to reasonable limit between Taka 25 to 30 per kilogram. According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a target of producing 69,456 tonnes of onion has been fixed from 6,910 hectares of land for all five districts under Rangpur agriculture region this season.
However, the farmers have already brought 7,125 hectares of land under cultivation the essential spicy crop till Friday last, exceeding the fixed farming target by 215 hectares or around 3.11 percent so far in the region.
About 2,120 hectares of land were brought under onion cultivation in Rangpur, 1,540 hectares in Gaibandha, 1,550 hectares in Kurigram, 610 hectares in Lalmonirhat and 1,305 hectares of land in Nilphamari districts under Rangpur agriculture region.
Talking to BSS today, Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker M Mesbahul Islam said production of both winter and summer variety onion has been increasing substantially every year reducing import of the essential commodity.
“The farmers are showing more interests in expanding cultivation of onion after achieving bumper yield with lucrative price in recent years,” he said, adding that there are more potentials for increasing production of the spicy crop in the region.
The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, commercial Banks, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank and NGOs are providing assistance to the farmers to make onion farming programme successful.
The assistance include distribution of high quality seed, disbursement of easy-term agri-loans at lower interest rates, providing training, latest technology, technical assistance and inputs under various programmes, Mesbahul added.
