Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Elias Hossain has warned that black market in onion business will not be tolerated.
He said the commission agents should have receipt of the onion purchased from the importer. There is no excuse that there is no receipt will be accepted. All information including the address of the importer should be stored by the onion wholesalers and warehouse owners. Failure to show receipt of imported onion will force us to take action.
He said this during a meeting on controlling onion prices with businessmen on Thursday afternoon at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room in Chattogram.
Deputy commissioner said to the businessmen of Khatunganj that, “There is no black market opportunity.” Display the receipt; with all the information including the addresses of the importers, we will talk to them over phone. People should not be held hostage for excessive profits.”
He said, “The administration intervenes only when people are suffering for over pricing.
You should overcome the greed for extra profit. Our campaign will continue. ‘The Executive Magistrate Touhidul Islam said that onion traders are still selling onion at Tk 70, while its actual price is Tk 42.
He said there is evidence that onions were being sold at Tk 70 in Pahartali market on Thursday morning, adding that the onions were imported from Myanmar. The rumor that onions which were imported from Myanmar are rotten is not true. About 5-10 percent is rotten.
Khatunganj Trade and Industries Association General Secretary Syed Chagir Ahmed said at the meeting that when onion production in the country increases, production of Indian onions also gets high and then we don’t face trouble in import. Again when local production declines then the supply from India also declines. The onion production of the country has to be increased then no one will be able to take any unethical benefit.
He also said that onion sales will have to be increased through TCB. He attracted the attention of the Deputy Commissioner for considering permission to enter onion truck during the day.
Deputy Commissioner Elias Hossain said the law enforcement agencies, including the CMP, the district police, will be notified to all onion trucks can enter in the city in both day and night.He said that all the onion cars will enter through Chattogram port. Customs will also be informed so that the onion imported port will be expedited as soon as possible.
Instructing the Khatunganj traders and commission agents, the Deputy Commissioner said that the administration will not be your opponent. You gain your profit, but you will not be spared if you make people hostage for you benefit. We will be monitoring.
CAAB Chattogram divisional President Nazar Hossain said that onion prices have risen because of the unethical activity of the businessmen. If the administration goes into operation, the price is going down, if campaign pauses, then the price is rising again.
