‘One lakh die annually from tobacco related diseases in BD’

More than 100 anti-tobacco bodies will hold human chain across the country today demanding imposition of high tax on tobacco products in the ensuing budget.
The human chain will be staged before the office of the deputy commissioner in every district from where memorandum will be submitted to the district chief, says a press release.
It has been stated in the press release that about 1 lakh people in the country are dying from tobacco related diseases annually.
Besides, nearly 7 per cent of the population, aged between 13 and 15, are consuming tobacco products, a great concern for the country, the press release issued by ‘Progga’ added.
The anti-tobacco campaigners Including National Heart Foundation, Dhaka Ahsania Mission, ACD, IPSA, Simantik, UBINIG, EC Bangladesh, WBB Trust, NATAB, Prottasha, AID Foundation and Progga will organize the human chain.
The government incurs several thousands crore Taka expenditures every year just for meeting the expenditures for treating the persons suffering from tobacco related diseases, the press release said.
