One killed, 50 hurt in post-poll violence

At least one person was killed and 50 others were injured and some houses and a campaign office of Awami League vandalised during the post-poll violence in different parts of the country including Munshiganj, Natore, Patuakhali and Sunamganj on Monday.
Chhatra League leader Mahbubul Alam Jhotan (26) of village Madhyamkandi, Gazaria in Munshiganj was killed in post on Monday evening. Jhoton, a student of city’s Daffodil University and son of Gazaria thana AL leader Khokan Pradhan was seriously injured in clashes between supporters of AL backed Upazila chairman candidate Amirul Islam and Abdul Mannan Dewan Mana of BNP. Jhotan was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he was declared dead in the evening on the day.
Meanwhile, sporadic clashes between the supporters of AL backed chairman candidates and BNP left eight people injured in Baraigram upazila of Natore on the day, reports said.
In Patuakhali, about a dozen of people were injured in clashes between the supporters of AL rebel candidate and BNP with supporters of AL backed candidate in Dumki upazila. A campaign office of AL and five houses were also damaged during the clashes in Natore and a shop was burnt in Patuakhali.
 In Natore the clash first erupted in the early hours of the day when the supporters of BNP-backed chairman candidate Ekramul Alam allegedly vandalised the election office of AL-backed candidate Mizanur Rahman at Panchbaria village after winning the election, Baraigram Police told the media.
At least two people were injured when the supporters of the both candidates were locked in chase and counter-chase following the vandalism, the police added.
Later, the supporters of both the candidates who were equipped with sticks , engaged in sporadic clashes in the morning hours of Monday.
They fought for about an hour, leaving six more people injured.
Of the injured, two were taken to Baraigram Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
The identities of the victims could not be known.
During the clash, they also vandalised five houses belonging to the both groups.
On receipt of the information of clashes police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
 In Patuakhali the clash ensued when AL rebel candidate Golam Sarwar along with BNP-backed candidate Shahadat Hossain were locked in clash the supporters of AL backed chairman elect Tariquzzaman Moni at Chhoto Digahi Union Office in Sadar upazila in the morning of Monday.
Both sides were equipped with sticks during half an hour clashes that left 12 supporters of Moni injured, according to reports received from the area.
Seven of those injured were sent to Patuakhali General Hospital.
No case has been filed in this connection till afternoon of the day, Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Monirul Islam told the media.
In separate incident, a grocery shop of a member of minority community was torched at Pangashia village in Dumki upazila. The reason behind the incident is over the Upazila election issue. More details of the incident were however, not available till the time of filing the report in the evening on the day.
The supporters of ruling AL and BNP got engaged in clashes in Dharmapasha, Sunamganj centering results of Upazila elections causing injury to 30 persons. The clashes ensued at the Upazila administration control room in the early hours of the day. Those injured were sent to different hospitals including Mymensingh Medical Collge Hospital. The police opened at least 70 rounds of blank fire to bring the situation under control, Officer in Charge of Dharmapasha thana told the media.
