‘One in 110 children affected by autism’

A five-day training workshop for media professionals on “Issue-based training workshop on script writing (child marriage and autism)” began in NIMC Bhaban in the city on Thursday.
Organised by National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMC), the workshop, under the project of “Advocacy and Communication for Children and Women (4th phase)” aimed at training media men so that they could play a better role for helping to raise awareness on the issues of child marriage and autism.
Dr Pran Gopal Datta, former Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, addressed the opening session of the workshop as the chief guest with Director General of NIMC AKM Nesar Uddin Bhuiyan in the chair.
Dr Pran Gopal mentioned that the number of autistic children in Bangladesh is yet to be known but it was estimated that 1 in every 110 children is affected by autism in the country.
There is no medical detection or cure for autism, but it can be controlled and improved through early diagnosis, treatment, therapy, and proper teaching, he said.
UNICEF, Bangladesh Sponsored the workshop while Md Nazrul Islam, Deputy Director of NIMC, conducted it. Speaking at the occasion, the chief guest said autism is a complex neuro-behavioural disorder that affects a person’s brain function which has a large impact on children, their families, communities and societies.
“Symptoms of autism gradually begin to show six months after birth and get established by the age of 24-month to three years, and have a tendency to continue to adulthood,” he said, adding that the syndrome of autism is distinguished not by a single symptom, but by a characteristic triad of symptoms, impairments in social interaction and communication; and restricted interests and repetitive behaviour.
A total of 30 media professionals from Ministry of Information, Press information Department, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, Department of Films and Publications and other leading private TV channels and print media houses are participating in the workshop.
Speaking on child marriage issue, Nazrul Islam said child marriage is one of the major social problems and its elimination requires a comprehensive and systematic response by individuals, families, the community, institution and policymaking level.
The participating media professionals were told of the necessity for eradicating child marriage and improving the condition of autistic children in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and about the need for decentralizing and disseminating knowledge on the issues, starting from capital to rural and remote areas.
