Customs intelligence of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Firday arrested a person with a large consignment of cigarettes worth about Tk 22 lakh brought illegally from abroad.
The arrested man has been identified as Mohammad Wahid Uddin.
Director General of Customs Intelligence Moinul Khan said, “Wahid
landed at the airport from Dubai around 3:50am on Friday. We detained him with 250 cartons of cigarettes near the No. 4 belt of Customs Hall.
“The cartons were kept in two bags.” He said, the cartons contain cigarettes of American Blend, USA and 303, Super Slims.
Legal actions would be taken as per customs law, added the DG.
According to the country’s import policy, import of such foreign cigarettes is prohibited. There are Benson and Hedges, Easy Light and Easy special gold brand cigarettes as well.
Officer-in-Charge of Airport Police Station Noor-e-Azam told The New Nation on Friday evening that they received no compliant in this regard.
