One smuggler was arrested with almost ruined species of 70 Sundhi tortoises of sweet water from Apabari Digraj area under Mongla Upazila in Bagerhat district on Monday (July 26) by the members of coastguards of the Western Zone deployed Mongla, according to a delayed report received here.
Lt. Commander Amirul Haq, an Officer of BN Media told, acting on secret information a contingent of the coastguards while discharging their normal duties raided Digraj area of the Upazila and arrested the smuggler named Manoj Roy (30), son of one Mongol Chandra Roy hails from the same area, searched the area and recovered the tortoises 70 in number. The recovered tortoises and the arrested smuggler were handed over to the department of Wild Life Preservation and Rearing Centre, Khulna for taking necessary action. Later, the department released the tortoises in the historic Khan Jahan Ali Dighi (lake) in Bagerhat and the smuggler was brought before a mobile court which convicted him to pay a fine of cash Taka. The convicted person had been engaged in the profession of illegal smuggling of tortoises of almost ruined spices.
