Police arrested an alleged member of an organised gang of thieves in possession of three power transformers while fleeing after stealing those from Tajpur village in Sirajdikhan upazila early Tuesday.
The arrestee was identified as Sultan Miah, 32, son of Sabdul Miah of Birkarkhar village in Dhanbari upazila of Tangail district.
Sub-inspector Arab Ali of Sirajdikhan Police Station said on information that three electric transformers got stolen from Tajpur village on Monday midnight, a team of police put up barricade on the Dhaka-Mawa Highway in Neemtala.
Sensing police barricade, a gang of thieves, numbering 7-8, tried to flee leaving behind the truck carrying the three transformers.
Later, police after a hot chase caught a member of the gang, Sultan, and seized the truck along with the transformers. But the rest of his gang fled the scene.
The market value of the transformers would be
Tk4.60 lakh, said Deb Kumar Malo, DGM of Sirajdikhan Palli Bidyut zonal office. A case was filed in this connection.
