Customs intelligence officials detained a passenger along with nine gold bars weighing 1.4 kilograms, and arrested another person with clothes and cigarettes at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital on Friday night and Saturday noon respectively. The detained persons have been identified as Elman Hossain, 33, inhabitant of Comilla, and Maqsudur Rahman, the custom officials said.
Moinul Khan, Director General of Customs and Detective Department, said that a team of a customs intelligence challenged Imran for his suspicious movement when he was crossing the green channel after landing at the airport by a flight of Malaysia Airlines around 12:10am.
After searching his luggage, the customs officials found nine gold bars worth about Tk 70 lakh and arrested him.
In another drive, the custom intelligence officials seized 199 cartoons of foreign cigarettes, and 136 pieces of Indian three-piece worth about at 19 lakh, the official said.
The arrested persons have been handed over to the Airport Police Station.
