Police in a night-long drive detained a man from Hathazari upazila of Chittagong on Wednesday morning for his alleged involvement with the killing of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of Superintendent of Police Babul Akter, in Chittagong.
The detained man was identified as Abu Naser alias Gunnu, 43, son of Mofazzal Hossain from Hazaribagh upazila of the district. He was a former member of Islami Chhatra Shibir, said Devdas Bhattacharya, Additional Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).
The police official also claimed he did not take part in the killing mission, the police official said.
He also said that Naser might have stayed at GEC intersection area during the gruesome killing.
“Naser spent several years in the Middle East. He is accused in a kidnapping case with Sitakunda police. CID has also pressed charges against him in that case,” Bhattacharya said.
He said Naser has been working as a caretaker of a shrine at Hathazari to stay below the police radar.
“We will be clear about his involvement with the sensational murder after interrogation under police custody,” he said.
So far, Abu Naser will be produced in the local court with 10-day remand appeal, the ADC said.
Earlier on Sunday, Mitu was stabbed and shot in the head by three men near her home in the port city while going to the GEC Intersection to drop her 6-year-old son at a bus stop for school.
