The City-Cyber Crime Investigation Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested a man on charges of fleeing with a motorcycle and extorting money in a fancy way. The name of the arrested is Samiul Islam. His home town is in Changbhanda village of Manohardi in Narsingdi.
City-Cyber’s e-fraud team arrested him from Hazaribagh on Saturday. Suranjana Saha, Assistant Police Commissioner of the e-fraud team of the City-Cyber Crime Investigation Division, who led the operation, told The New Nation that a victim advertised on social media Facebook for the sale of his YAMAHA R15M motorcycle. Someone approached
him to buy the bike. Later, they met in Pallabi area of Dhaka as per the previous plan to see the bike and fled with the bikes saying that they would give a bike test drive. The police official said that even after taking the bike, the fraudsters demanded Tk 20,000 in cash by changing the voice through mobile apps and promising to return the bike to the victim. If the victim doesn’t believe his words, the fraudster send pictures and videos of the bike to Emo to convince him. The victim paid TK 7,000 in cash but the fraudster does not return the bike, AC Suranjana said.
Later a case was registered with the DMP’s Pallabi Police Station following the victim’s allegations. The case was assigned to the e-fraud team of the City-Cyber Crime Investigation Department. The accused was later arrested from Hazaribagh with the help of secret intelligence technology. A YAMAHA R15M motorcycle with an estimated value of TK 550,000 and a fake Facebook ID used in the scam were recovered from his custody. When the arrested Samiul was produced before the court, the court granted him one day remand.
