 M M Jasim :
Only one teacher is now taking English classes of about 6,000 students of Honours and BA pass courses of Netrokona Government College.
Apart from this, the same teacher is also taking classes of Intermediate Section of the college.
The teachers of the college feel that the shortage of teacher is bound to impact on HSC, Degree Pass Course and English Honours Course results this year.
“The government insists us to improve English results, but how can we do that when there is only one teacher?” Abul Kalam Azad, Principal of the institution said.
“As the college authorities don’t have any option, I’m trying my best to take all Honours classes of the English Department. Besides, I’m also taking classes of Degree Pass Course and intermediate section,” lecturer Jahangir Alam, the only teacher of English Department of the college said, adding but it is not possible to attend all the classes.
According to college authorities, Associate professor and head of the English Department Suparna Dey left the college on July 10. Since then only one teacher is taking English classes, but no
initiative has been taken for fresh recruitment for the vacant posts by the government.
The government approved 64 teachers for the college against the required demand for 148. Besides, 10 posts of teacher have remained vacant for a long.
When contacted Abul Kalam Azad, Principal of the college, said they have continued to send letters to the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) for English teachers but did not get any response from the Directorate.
“Even I met the DG and requested him to give appointment of English teachers on emergency basis. He gave me a patient hearing and assured me of giving appointment of English teachers. But we are still running English Honours Course, intermediate and Degree Pass Course by only one teacher,” the Principal said.
As a result the students are being affected seriously, he said. Director General of DSHE said there are many colleges where academic activities are being hindered due to teacher’s crisis. But the DSHE is trying to resolve the crisis, he said.
The college was established in 1949 and it was nationalised in 1981. The Honours Courses were introduced in 1993-94 academic session. The students are studying in honours on 14 subjects and Masters on 10 subjects. A total 13,000 students are now studying in the college.
Junayed Ahmed, a HSC level student, said as a very few number of classes on English subject are held. So, he started learning English from a coaching centre to complete the subject.
“The classes were not held properly. But the examinations hold in time. So we must go to the private teachers,” a Degree Student of the college said.
