One cr people suffer from psychiatric problem

Experts at a seminar on Thursday said, one crore people are suffering from psychiatric problem. They need counsel and treatment to recover from the depression and mental illness. But the task has become hard in absence of adequate psychiatrists and modern instrument.
They said this in a seminar on “4th Bangladesh Clinical psychology Council” at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the Dhaka University (DU) campus.
Clinical Psychology Department of DU and Nasirullah Physiotherapy Unit jointly organised the programme.
National Professor Dr M R Khan said, the increase of all kinds of diseases is the impact of mental problem. The patients are not taking appropriate treatment for the same reasons. So it is necessary to appoint psychiatrist in each and every public and private hospital all over the country, he said.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor A A M S Arefin Siddique presided over the programme while DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Shahid Akhter Hossain and Director of Psychological Health Institute Professor Waziul Alam Chowdhury, among others, addressed the programme.
Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology Department Shahnur Hossain and
British Clinical Psychologist Dr Graham Pawel presented two separate articles in the programme.
The experts said, the patients in rural areas are suffering the most. There is only one mental hospital in the country and it is at Pabna. The country needs more hospitals.
