A baby was burnt alive and another kid also severely injured in a devastating fire in the city’s Hazaribagh slum on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Maria Akter, 2, daughter of one Omar Ali from Bhola district and the injured kid as Maria’s brother Solaiman, 5. He is now in a critical condition at DMCH.
Their father’s name is Omar Ali from Bhola district.
At least 22 shanties were gutted in the fire. Amount of loss could not be known instantly, Fire Service and Civil Defence Duty Officer Forhad Hossain said.
The fire broke out at the Balur Math slum in Boubazer under Hazaribagh Police Station at 3.00pm, he said.
At least two fire fighting engines rushed to the spot and doused the flame around 4.15pm, the fire fighter said.
He added that the fire service authority could not identify the reasons of the fire.
Hazaribagh Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mainul Islam said that the body had been handed to the victim’s family. Another fire broke out at a cycle factory in Tejgaon area on Wednesday.
Fire Service Control Room Duty Officer Shahzadi Sultana said that eight Fire Service units reached Meghna Cycle Factory and doused the fire around 2:15pm.
The fire originated around 1:50pm, sources said. The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately, they added.
