Once mighty Padma River, one of the leading rivers of the country, now sees nearly a dead river in the dry season due to drastic fall in the flow of water. According to the water experts and the environmentalists, the river remains lean in the dry season due to negative impacts of the Farakka Barrage which was constructed on Ganges, in the upstream of the Padma River. Its water flow has been declining for over decades due to withdrawal of Ganges water by India. If the river ultimately dies, it will bring serious negative impacts on the ecological balance and the environment in the south-western region of the country. The region may turn into desert area. The picture of the buffalo cart indicates that the once tidal Padma River is becoming withered. The buffalo cart and truck are plying on the river. The scenario of buffalo cart was taken from Rajshahi area recently.
