We can’t miss the occasion to equally remember the help and sacrifice of the Indian army and political leadership without which the war could have been much longer and destruction of human lives and materials ever larger. While we deny any domination of India over Bangladesh, it is equally true that they have sheltered millions of people to keep alive the dream of liberation through the terrible time.
We are happy by this time that we have made significant socio-economic progress leaving behind the shackle of abject poverty and terrible deprivation under Pakistani occupation. The success is noticeable almost at all levels to make Bangladesh a self-reliant nation. We are closer to becoming a middle-income nation by 2021 and our people have proved their business leadership and entrepreneurial competence earning recognition for Bangladesh in global market.
But what is equally disappointing is that the country is now divided and yet to be free from fear and exploitation by people from within. We must ensure human rights and safety for all by developing an accountable system of governance to give the people the feeling that they are protected in a free country. They have nothing to be worried.
The sacrifices our people made without surrendering to Pakistani occupation even in a situation when leaders had to leave the country has to be duly recognized. We have to be also positive to make positive achievements to make the country secure and prosperous.
On the Victory Day, we must know what victory is and whose victory it is. We must all learn to respect Victory Day as people’s Victory Day that calls for the security of their life and liberty. Our people did not fight for replacing one government by another, but for replacing autocracy with democracy.
