An old man named Dhirendra Kundu (65) was beaten to death brutally by one of his opponents over the land dispute in Kundupara of village Dhaldah near Foilahat within UIjalkur union under Rampal Upazila in the district on Wednesday.
It is learnt that Dhirendra Kundu of the village sold his lands of 0.02 decimals to his nephew Gopal Kundu (son of his late brother Nitai Chandra Kundu) some 12 years ago to bear the expenses of the marriage of his daughter.
It was a verbal condition that Gopal Kundu will return the plot of land to its owner (Dhirendra Kundu) when he will be able to refund the money to Gopal Kundu. But Gopal Kundu did not keep his promise. Under the auspices of the local Awami League leaders a number of arbitrations were held on several occasions in order to settle up the matter. But the result was zero.
On the day of occurrence at about 3 pm finding Dhiren Kundu alone Sona Kundu alias Sanjoy Kundu, brother of Gopal Kundu confined him in his house and beat him mercilessly with iron hammers. But no other inmates of the house came forward to rescue the old man.
