The Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka on Thursday noon sentenced Oishee Rahman to die for killing her father, Special Branch Police Officer Mahfuzur Rahman, and her mother Swapna Rahman in 2013.
Judge Syed Ahmed of the tribunal passed the order in presence of three accused including the slain daughter, her friends Mizanur Rahman Rony and Asaduzzaman Jony. The court also fined Oishee Tk 20,000, in default, she will have to suffer one year in prison.
Besides, the tribunal sentenced Mizanur Rahman Rony to two years’ imprisonment and fined him Tk 5,000, in default, he will suffer one more month in the prison. The court acquitted other accused Asaduzzaman Jony.
The tribunal judge maintained that Oishee was mature when she committed the double murder and it seemed fit to award the highest punishment to her. Earlier on November 4, the tribunal fixed November 12 to pronounce the verdict. The trial in the case lodged for killing the couple began on July 8, 2014, with recording depositions of the witnesses. A total of 39 witnesses, out of 57, testified to the court.
On October 13, Oishee claimed that she had not killed her parents. In her written statement, she said that the male police members who had interrogated her during remand, had tortured her and compelled her to make confessional statement, admitting her involvement in the murder.
According to the case statement, on August 16, 2013, police recovered the decomposed bodies of SB Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman from their Chamelibagh residence in the capital.
Later, Oishee surrendered to the police admitting her involvement in the killing. Police also arrested her two friends Asaduzzaman and Mizanur and domestic help of their house Khadiza Akhter Sumi in connection with the murder. On August 24 of the year of murder, Oishee made confessional statement to a Dhaka court admitting her involvement in the murder under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. However, during the trial process, she appealed to the court to withdraw that statement. Meanwhile, a juvenile court of Dhaka has been holding the trial of domestic help Sumi.
Mahfuzur’s brother Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Rubel filed a case with Paltan Police Station on August 17. Abul Khayer, Inspector of Detective Branch of Police, submitted two separate charge sheets- one against Oishee and her two friends on March 9, 2014, and the other against Sumi as she was then a juvenile. According to the charge sheet, Oishee alone killed her parents while Jony instigated her and Rony gave her shelter after the murder. Sumi has been accused of assisting Oishee in concealing the dead bodies.
