OC, 5 others accused of torturing woman in custody

Court asked to submit probe report within 15 days

A local court has directed to submit the investigation report within 15 days against six people including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Haluaghat Police Station in Mymensingh
Hafiz Al-Assad, Judge of the 5th Amili Court, on Wednesday gave this direction to the district Superintendent of Police.
Nur-E-Islam, Superintendent of Police in Mymensingh, told The New Nation on Friday that a team has already started the investigation and the report will be submitted in due time as per the court order.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters in programme on Friday, “Police are investigating the torture allegation against the accused. If we found their involvement with the incident then they will have to face legal actions.”  
Earlier on December 21, Haluaghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamrul Islam Miah filed the case against the accused and lodged the complaint with the court.
The prosecutor’s lawyer Alhaj Nazrul Islam Sardar said that on 11 August, Jhorna Begum, a housewife, was taken over by the Haluaghat Police Station OC Kamrul Islam Mia. The OC demanded Tk 5 lakh from the woman.
When Jhorna Begum refused to pay the money, Dhurail Union Parishad Chairman Varas Uddin Sumon and the OC took her to the OC’s room around 3 o’clock in the day and nailed her physically. 1
The lawyer also said that she was tortured the next night. She was produced before the court on 13 August evening at 6.
Later, she was sent to jail. The next day, when she became unconscious, she was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. After eight days of treatment, she was again arrested.
Later, a case was filed against her for stealing four cattle from Haluaghat Police Station.
