The government is going to appoint an observer under University Grants Commission (UGC) in the trustee boards of all private universities to supervise the policy making and academic activities in order to check militancy.
The UGC has also formed a three-member committee to monitor works in public and private universities and colleges across the country.
UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan told it in view of the recent terror attacks at Gulshan and Sholakia in a press briefing held in its auditorium on Sunday.
Dr Md Akhter Hossain, Convener of the UGC will lead the monitoring committee while UGC members Jesmine Parveen and Md Shaheed Siraj will act as the members of the committee.
The UGC also recommended that the government would bring amendment to the Private University Act 2010 so that its representatives could be inducted in the board of trustee of different institutions to oversee its activities.
The team, if necessary, will visit universities, colleges and libraries any time without any prior permission of the authorities, the UGC Chairman said.
After visiting the campuses, if the committee senses any militant activities on the campus, it will prepare and submit a report to the education ministry and law enforcing agencies for taking necessary action, he said.
Recently, UGC sent a team to North South University to take some important documents, but the authorities are yet to respond to them. The Commission visited the university after law enforcers found the involvement of some NSU students in the Gulshan and Sholakia attacks last month.
The UGC gave NSU authorities one month time to submit the documents. If they fail, they will face legal action, he added. Terming the militancy as the global problem, the UGC Chairman said, the government has taken many measurers to eliminate militancy from the country.
“There are many public universities where the militants were active. So the public university administrations also have to work more to vanish the virus from their institutions,” he said.
He said that the government as well as the UGC would not tolerate any terrorism in the country’s educational institutions. Professor Mannan also called upon the teachers of public and private universities and colleges to create awareness among the students about militancy.
