Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque said that nutritious foods like egg, fish and meat are surplus in our country but many people have no ability to buy such food items.
He said this in an International Conference on Green Environment for the Sustainable Future organized by the
Awami League Sub-Committee on Forest and Environment in the Auditorium of Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of Dhaka University on Wednesday.
He said, the income of most of the people is not sufficient to buy nutrition foods like meat, fish and egg.
The Minister said, “There are three pillars of food security. One of them is self-sufficiency in food. Today we are self-sufficient in rice. Demand of potatoes in our country is 3-5 lakh tonnes, we produce 1.5 million tonnes of potatoes there. About 10 lakh tonnes of potatoes are our surplus. We also have surplus in egg, fish and meat production.”
“Our country’s people cannot buy the nutritious food because their income is meagre. Therefore, the challenge of the government of Bangladesh is to increase the income of the people,” he added.
Professor Akhteruzzaman, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University inaugurated the conference and Awami League Office-Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Awami League’s Forest and Environment Sub Committee Chairman Professor Khandaker Bazlul Haque, among others, were present.
