Nusrat, the Voice of Faith at AFD

The musical event organised around the book presentation by
Dr Pierre-Alain Baud – Nusrat,
the Voice of Faith was held
at the Alliance Française de
Dhaka (AFD) in the city’s
Dhanmondi area recently.
Dr Pierre-Alain Baud, a French music researcher, journalist and
former associate researcher at the Music and the World Religions and Culture Departments, University of Dhaka, was closely involved
with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s life and music for a decade.
The book The Voice of Faith is a
personal account of the great
qawwal’s life as observed by
Dr Pierre-Alain Baud who spent
a significant amount of time
in Nusrat’s company and organised a numbers of his international
programmes worldwide.
The Voice of Faith was published in French and Urdu first, then in English before being currently in process
of translation to Bangla.
To make the event lively, a series of events took place starting with the screening of the several films on Nusrat. Prof Kaiser Haq, poet, gave
a critical appreciation of the book. Legendary Lalon singer of Bangladesh Farida Parveen performed couple
of songs and discussed on the
topic Lalon and Sufism.
The event ended with the Kobi Gaan performance by Arif Dewan and Alya Begum Alo. Arif Dewan is a very
popular singer in Bangladesh. He has many popular audio albums including Ami ek pother baul, Premer Smriti, Behesti Sawgat. Arif continued his musical journey because of his musical satisfaction and for the love
he received from the mass people.
Alya Begam Alo was born in 1965
in Faridpur. She starts singing when she was six. Under the guidance
of Abdur Rahman Bawati
she becomes more popular in
Kobi Gaan and Zari Gaan. n
