Nurse killed after rape, pushed off moving bus

A woman died after she was reportedly gang-raped and thrown from a moving bus of Swarnalata Paribahan on the Kishoreganj-Bhairab Highway near Gozaria Bilpara in Katiadi upazila of Kishoreganj district on Monday night.
The victim, 23-year-old Shahinur Akter alias Tania, was a nurse of Ibn Sina Hospital in the capital. She was a daughter of Gias Uddin from Baherchar village under the upazila.
Police arrested bus driver Nuruzzaman, 39, and his assistant Lalon Mia, 33, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The victim’s uncle filed a complaint, which stated that on Monday evening, Tania boarded the Kishoreganj-bound Sharnalata Paribahan bus from Mahakhali, so that she could spend the first day of Ramadan with her family. After all passengers got down at katiadi’s ujanpur, some men gang-raped her, and threw her from the running bus.
Locals, rescuing her took her to the Katiadi Hospital in a critical condition, where the on-duty physician declared her dead.
Quoting locals, Katiadi Police Station Inspector Shafiqul Islam said, “We will continue the investigation and the body has been sent for an autopsy,” the police official said.
Tania was strangled with a piece of cloth, her elder brother Badal Mia claimed.
According to family members, Tania had boarded a Swarnalata Paribahan from Airport area on Monday afternoon. She talked to her family members several times over mobile phone after getting on the bus. Around 8:30pm, she again called her brother and said she would reach Pirispur very soon. Later, she was found dead in hospital.
Around 10:45pm on Monday, rapists took her to Kotiadi Health Complex and left her body there. They said she died from an accident, they claimed.
Tania had an LED 19″ tv, a Samsung android mobile phone and Tk 15,000 to 16,000 of her salary, her brother Kafil Uddin said.
