The incumbent committee of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) is supposed to be dissolved as their extended 90-day tenure ends today but its vice president has asked for further extension.
While VP Nurul Haque Nur has demanded continuation of the body, General Secretary Golam Rabbani and Assistant General Secretary Saddam Hossain said they would leave their posts. Saddam Hossain also said it was “immoral and undemocratic” to hold office in violation of the constitution, our DU correspondent reports.
The one-year tenure of Ducsu ended on March 22 this year which was later automatically extended for 90 days as per Section-C of Article-6 of the Ducsu charter.
“The elected office bearers shall hold office for 365 days. In case the election is not held in time, the elected office bearers shall continue for a further period not exceeding 90 days or until holding of the election, whichever is earlier, after which the union shall stand dissolved automatically,” the charter added.

On demanding extension of incumbent committee, Nurul Haque Nur, who was elected from the quota reformists’ platform, said, “We want extension of current committee since we have many tasks left uncompleted due to indefinite closure of university following the coronavirus pandemic.”
Nur also said, on June 14 he had asked Dhaka University Vice Chancellor and Ducsu President Prof Akhtaruzzaman about holding polls but the VC did not respond.
“We repeatedly asked the VC to take necessary measures for holding the upcoming election but he did not pay any heed. If the incumbent body is dissolved then Ducsu polls will be impossible,” Nur added.
Meanwhile Golam Rabbani who was expelled from the post of general secretary of Chhatra League, said he would leave his post as general secretary of Ducsu after 12:00 tonight.
But he added, “Tk 90 lakh remains unused in the Ducsu fund right now. We also have some other duties which we were meant to carry out in the last three months. I will leave my post tonight but will request the VC to extend it for a timeframe in which we can complete our unfinished tasks,” said Rabbani.
DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman said all decisions will be taken as per university rules and charter.
